The Simple Styling Trick that Makes all the Difference
All you need is a good old white T-shirt.
I owe one of my go-to styling tricks to the humble white T-shirt. It’s the one thing I reach for when I pair two pieces that I love but the colours together feel like they need a little lift. Usually, these will be two dark colours or muted shades that need something to pull them together and let them both shine in their own right.
Take this look…

The dark brown jumper and khaki-coloured trousers are two pieces that I’ve worn countless times, are warm and comfortable, and always make me feel good when I wear them. But those two colours side by side? Honestly, the outfit looks a little dull. That small touch of white hem on the T-shirt adds definition. It breaks the two pieces up and highlights both colours without them almost blending into each other.
If ever I’m umming and ahhing over an outfit, my first port of call is to add a white T-shirt under whatever I’m wearing. I make sure it’s the right length so just a few centimetres of hem is showing, which is enough to have an impact without it becoming the main character in your outfit. Think of the white T-shirt as your supporting act, but one that does a lot of heavy lifting.
Tips for styling with a white T-shirt:
If you’re wearing dark or muted colours but it doesn’t feel quite right, try adding a white T-shirt underneath your top/jumper/jacket.
Choose a regular-length T-shirt for cropped/waist-length tops and jumpers so just a few centimetres of the hem are showing.
Choose a long-length T-shirt for your slightly longer pieces. For women, the men’s section is a good place to look.
A fresh white T-shirt will always be classic. But if you want a shade that’s slightly softer, try a colour like buttermilk.
Go for quality. If you’re indoors somewhere, the heating’s cranked up and you need to take that top layer off, you’ll want to be happy in just your T-shirt. My favourites are Rise & Fall, Uniqlo U and Studio Nicholson.
