Apart from the few years that I spent in Sydney, I’ve lived in the UK for the entirety of my 33 years of life. So why I’m genuinely shocked whenever winter rolls around and the temperatures plummet to 0°C or below, I don’t know. But it happens and, without fail, I’m left scrambling as I try and figure out how to keep warm and comfortable without completely overhauling my wardrobe or panic-buying every thermal layer I can get my hands on (although I do love a thermal - these long-sleeved tops from Uniqlo are my go-to).
Instead, I’m thinking about how I generally like to dress - and that’s with layers. In the warmer months, I’ll happily layer lighter pieces on top of each other to create different silhouettes, so it’s only natural that I do the same in winter with my heftier pieces. Which means gathering up my knitwear and layering them with other pieces for extra warmth.
The Roll Neck Under a Shirt
Don’t pack away your summer shirts just yet; I’ve been gravitating towards this look a lot recently. The shirt is from the Uniqlo U AW23 collection and I probably only got a couple of wears of it on its own before it got too cold to wear with nothing else. It has an oversized, relaxed fit which makes it easy to wear layers underneath. I’ve been putting a black roll neck on underneath which is slim-fitting so it’s not too bulky but still gives me the warmth I need. Plus, that extra bit of fabric peeking through the cuffs of the sleeves and the collar adds a touch of styling that makes the outfit a little more interesting.
