Earlier this week, I wrote about how I haven’t made any New Year’s resolutions. Instead, I spent the beginning of the year looking at some of the positive habits I picked up naturally in 2023 and will keep up in 2024. I’ve done the same with my outfits: focused on the positives of last year - what I enjoyed wearing - and will build on this year.
My style is definitely more on the minimal end of the style spectrum and I have a habit of sticking to pieces in black, white, grey or navy. But looking back on 2023, I realised I started bringing more colour into my looks - and I loved experimenting with pieces in hues I would have previously avoided.
When I was reviewing last year’s looks, there were a few colour combinations that cropped up time and again, so I’ll be taking them in 2024 too. None of these are particularly bold or ‘out there’ but if you’re a minimalist like me, they’re a good way of incorporating a little more into your looks.
Navy and caramel

Navy, for me, would normally be paired with black, white or grey - or I’d go for a full navy look. But navy and caramel as a pairing is something I’ve enjoyed wearing recently, adding flashes of white, like here, to break it up a bit. This year I’ll be looking at flipping this look too - navy on the bottom, caramel on the top - to maximise this combination.
Navy and bright green

This is a bolder colour combination than the one above, but one I loved wearing in summer. There’s a misconception that you can’t wear green and navy together but I for one love how the two colours look. Like above, having the natural linen trousers breaks up the colours for a little palette cleanser, while wearing shorts in the second image stops the two colours together looking like one big block.
Dark green and off-white

I lived in this colour combination in spring and summer. The off-white was a great way to ease into the warmer months and felt refreshing after winter, while the dark green added a utilitarian (and more practical) touch to my outfits. With this duo, I found having an off-white ‘base’ worked well - i.e. trousers and a shirt or T-shirt plus trainers, on occasion - as did having one dark green piece as the statement.
Navy and khaki

A similar, but slightly more muted, combination to my navy and bright green looks above. This is one of those combos that works at any time of year, so I wore it a lot throughout 2023, making a few tweaks here and there depending on the season. As with the looks above, I find adding a touch of white in between navy and khaki green stops the two colours from clashing - and helps them both stand out equally. This image is an outfit I wore in the summer (a very British summer where jackets are required), but I recreated this look with chunky ankle boots in autumn too.
Green and beige

Looks like most of my ‘colourful’ outfits involved navy and/or green last year. It makes sense because I love both colours - and it just goes to show how I’ve been able to mix, match and come up with different outfits using the pieces I own, which is exactly how I like to dress. I’m wearing the same coat in both images - an oversized trench in a sandy beige - that works well with every shade of green going: apple, olive, emerald, you name it. Once the temperatures increase and I can put my big winter coats away, I’ll start experimenting with more of my green pieces with this coat too.
