When ballet flats came crashing back onto the runways and into stores, I wasn’t sure what to think. I’d been there, done that the first time around and I must have worn my first pair of flimsy silver ballet pumps from Topshop so much, I’m pretty sure the soles completely wore out.
Could I revisit the shoe that essentially made up my entire personality as a 15-year-old? Can my now 34-year-old feet handle little to no support in my footwear? They did look cute. They did offer something different to my rotation of boots-trainers-sandals. But still, I dithered when it came to committing to wearing that flatter-than-flat shoe again.
That is, until the Mary Jane started cropping up, giving us a slightly alternative option to the classic ballet style.
Like the ballet pump, Mary Janes are flat, neat and sleek but they have a strap across the foot, holding you in and giving you that extra bit of support (so no running for the bus and those flimsy flats flying off your foot… a memory from the first time around I can remember all too clearly). I now have two pairs of Mary Janes: a black pair with a rounded toe and a green pointed style. I’ve been reaching for them a lot now spring has rolled around and can’t get enough of the versatility. From big coats to jeans and barrel-leg trousers, here are six looks with Mary Janes I’ve been wearing on the regular.
Look 1: With a shirt and cocoon-leg trousers
This has been the outfit I’ve reached for most for going out for dinner or drinks. It’s got that element of smartness that says “I’ve made an effort” but it’s still comfortable (those trousers come with a bit of room, so they’re pasta-friendly). I’m not really a heels wearer, except for dressy occasions like weddings, so these shoes are the perfect smart-casual hybrid for the times when boots are too heavy, and sandals too light.
