Recreating Looks from The Row, Jacquemus and Jil Sander
5 Tailored Outfits Inspired by the SS24 Shows.
Yes, I know we’re all still catching up on the autumn/winter 2024 shows (and still debating The Row’s decision to ban photos at theirs). And yes, I know a lot of us are still in our coats and jumpers. But it’s the first week of March, which always marks the beginning of spring in my eyes.
Last week I wrote about this weird in-between moment where we’re still feeling the sharp winds and damp drizzle of winter but spring is starting to (quite literally) sprout up through the ground. In an attempt to get my creative styling juices going for the new season, I’ve been looking back on the SS24 shows - specifically, the looks that caught my eye the first time around and that I subsequently saved to the various corners of the internet reserved for style inspiration (i.e., Pinterest).
As is the case with most seasons, I bypassed the more ‘out there’ looks. I can appreciate them, sure, and the wild and the creative is a lot of what makes fashion interesting. But they don’t particularly align with my personal style so I’m always drawn to the looks that I can see wearing myself. Better yet, if they spark an idea for an outfit with items of clothing I already own, I’m onto a winner.
It was tailoring, this season, that did it for me. Like a lot of people who live in the UK, I don’t have much use for overly summery pieces, apart from maybe during a week-long heatwave or a trip somewhere abroad. So I spend a lot of spring and summer in trousers, shirts and light knits - the same, essentially, as what I wear in the colder months, only in lighter fabrics like cotton and linen, rather than wool. So it makes sense that these kinds of looks made it straight onto my mood board for SS24.
This season, we’ve got relaxed tailoring, looks that are more structured, and cool climate-friendly outfits with jumpers (thanks to our neighbours in Denmark). Here are five looks, in particular, I’ll be recreating from the SS24 shows, using pieces I already own.
Look 1: Recreating The Row
First up, we have this look from The Row. Like most people with an interest in fashion, this is one of the shows I always look forward to the most each season. The pieces are always exquisite and minimalist without being boring, and each look provides me with loads of inspiration - even if it is just where to place a bangle. When I saw this look, I was first drawn to the large, long sleeves of the T-shirt, the high-waisted pants, the placement of the belt buckle just off to the side, and the extra touch of the fabric peeking out over the top of the raffia bag. Like a lot of The Row’s looks, I loved the elegant simplicity of it. Then my second thought was: I can recreate this so easily.
For this look, I got out my pair of silk, chocolate brown Max Mara trousers from the ‘90s that I got from second-hand store Number 50 (more on that here). They’re a darker version of The Row’s but then, this post is more about inspiration than all-out copying. I’ve paired them with a black oversized COS tee and Mary Janes and spun my belt to the side to get that side buckle detail. I love the idea of fabric draping over the top of a basket bag too, which I’ve recreated using a silk scarf.
Look 2: Recreating Lovechild 1979
As I mentioned above, knitwear always makes an appearance for me during spring and summer. It’s the time when my lighter pieces come out, like my lightweight cashmere, so I’m happy when I see it being represented on the runway - it gives me a little spark of inspiration to wear my knits in a slightly different way. This look from Lovechild 1979 is a very simple one but hey, sometimes they’re the best. You can’t beat an all-white look in my book (although I am almost guaranteed to spill something tomato-based whenever I wear one) and when it comes in the form of a relaxed-fit jumper and loose tailored trousers? Even better.
This cashmere knit from Rise & Fall has a loose fit and large sleeves, so it makes a good option to recreate this look. I’ve worn it with loose, tapered-leg trousers from By Malene Birger, which are made from an incredible heavy linen (and are currently on sale). I don’t love the black shoes worn in the Lovechild 1979 look personally (I find the contrast too stark), so I’ve paired with tan fisherman sandals for a slightly softer look instead.
